Very well written and put together. Kept the suspense and chills every now and then.

The movie devil is now in theaters. This movie of gore and suspence is the perfect film for people (like me) that are to scared to watch movies like : Grudge , Saw , exocisme and more. [...] I give 9.5 on 10 for the story and 8.5 on 10 for the fearness. All the actors were great because they were in the characters and all the time in this action. My favourite character and actor was the grama Jenny O'Hara because she was very scary. Now for the producer I think that Night Shyamalan was very good and pertinent.

Kinda blah. Guessed the devil character right off the bat, it was that predictable. There wasn't any really scenes that made me jump. But on the plus side, it's not the normal steaming pile we've come to expect from Shyamalan but maybe that has to do with the fact that he just provided the story, not the screenplay or direction.

Definitely better than some of his movies i.e. the village and signs, we all remember that. Has a fairly decent plot with good pacing. A little bit obvious and although he throws religion into every movie I feel it's a bit much to smack you on the head with it. All in all it was an enjoyable movie and worth seeing in the cheap theater.

M. Night Shyamalan gives too much power/credit to the devil in judging evil (not how the Bible describes lucifer or judgement of sin) Although a little off, it still ends with a good message. Keeps your attention (a "whodunit") Some interesting twists. Not the best acting, but still fun to watch. A little to scary for kids. Enjoy the show!

It was an amazing movie! And yes, very accurate of the reality of the supernatural!! Of course it was religious! It's about the Devil, what did you think the moral of the story would be?

There wasn't much room for anything to happen in this movie, and yes that pun was intended. The elevator idea was much to cramped, and whenever something happened it was just a black screen anyway. It was very repetitive and has little re-watch value. If you haven't seen it yet... just see something else.

Brilliant script. I think Martin Luther King Jr would describes the moral of this story like this " We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the capacity to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us". I left the theatre with a feeling of wanting to confess my sins to God so that Satan stays in his own realm and as far from me as possible.

This was a nice break from all those plot-less horrors that have been out recently. I am a huge fan of horror flicks, and this one was not that scary. It was more of a murder mystery, which was not what I was expecting from a movie named "Devil" I also found it highly religious. Nonetheless, a well made and well directed movie, not too scary but extremely suspenseful, really had me on the edge of my seat all the way through!

I really enjoyed this movie. And I liked that it was creepy and kept you on the edge of your seat without being gory bloody. I didn't mind not seeing how the people died. It just made me wonder who the killer was even more. And I'm really glad that not the whole thing was done in the elevator. There was stuff going on outside that little box to move the movie along. I like most of M. Night's movies (with the exception of Unbreakable), and okay, I know he didn't direct this one. He wrote it and I believe he produced it. But it shows in the eerie quality of the movie. Overall a pretty good movie.

Movies are rarely perfect but one must grade them to our personal taste. As Mr Shyamalan himseld once said: " my movies are spiritual and have an emotional perspective". I agree and this movie triggers interesting converstations among friends. I tought it was worth the look an so it was for his other movies!!

I personally kinda liked the movie, it wasn't terrible but it could've been pulled off a lot better. The movie itself was pretty weird. Honestly though I knew who 'the devil' was in the previews. (complete give away of the movie) - they say its someone who you don't expect so it wouldn't be any of the guys which only leaves the two women and since everyone thought it was the younger woman, it clearly wasn't her. Anyways, overall it was alright, but the majority of people who watch this movie will think its bad, so I'd probably just watch it online.

Loved 6th Sense, liked Unbreakable, tolerated Signs. However I felt ever since then his movies having been getting increasingly... bad. The Village was laughable, The Lady in the Water was a sleeper and The Last Airbender was clearly for kids. I won't even mention how The Happening was the biggest slap in the face. I actually felt stupider coming away from that one. Now this brings us to The Devil. If you've seen the rest of his more recently failed movies you'll expect that the movie looks great in the trailer, appears to have a potentially interesting storyline but will somehow take some horrible twist at the end which will inevitably ruin the whole experience. I regretted the $5 I spent seeing this and it was even cheap Tuesday. The actors were low grade. The acting was even lower grade... too much of it wasn't believable (such as the conversations that took place between a group of strangers in an elevator) Hell I spend probably an hour a day riding evelvators at home and work and have found myself at times stuck for a few moments. Never in my life have I been with people that were as "unqiue" as these people. Too many unanswered questions. Save your money.

I liked 'Devil, ' although this may be because I liked M. Knight Shyamalan's other films (including 'Signs' and 'The Happening') If you like horror/suspense, or gothic horror mixed with a bit of Science Fiction, you will like this film. Like his other films, 'Devil' has a good plot with a simple story, and great atmosphere. And like his other films, there is a moral thread running throughout the plot, much like Stephen King's stories. Like his other films, 'Devil' is best seen on a large screen to appreciate the atmosphere, lighting, and camera work. Great to see on a rainy day or cold night!

Let me keep this short and sweet. I've loved all of M Night's work, but more for his original storylines than his work as a director. I find that he can't direct actors very well in order to get the best out of them. However, whether you love him or hate him, everyone has to admit that he writes original stories. This one was put in the hands of a good director who took a group of c-list actors and turned M Night's vision into a concise, suspenseful little thriller. Very entertaining and just right at 1h20m.

M Night redeems himself from silly (the Village) or pointless (the Happening) plots with this film. Since he wrote and co-produced it, I was ready for a flop. Devil chugs along a full speed, tosses in lots of red herrings, the ending makes great sense in light of all we learn. Acting is above par for a horror film, and I love the devil him/her/it self. The editing and decoupage in the elevator are very smart, as is the sound editing. I have an issue about the appearance of a walkie talkie, but I can almost forgive that.

Curse you M. Night Shyamalan! I wasted another $10 plus on another one of your horrible movies, despite promising myself I would never see another one of your flics after the insulting 'The Happening'. It is amazing how all of Shyamalan's movies are a photocopy of a photocopy of a... 6th Sense was great, then all others afterwards sucked more and more in exact order. Where is rock bottom for this turd? He should have lost his directing license after 'The last Airbender', but then, there is no god.

After being mildly disappointed with M. Night's 'Unbreakable' and 'The Village' I was preparing for a bit of disappointment with this one. I have to say I am a fan again, 'Devil' was a great movie - not overly scary per say but most definitely suspensful and it did have its jump-outta-your-seat moments. There are reviews that say people figured it out right away and that the movie was too short with not much of an effort made at character development - the movie is the perfect length for this type of story and condisering the majority of the scenes take place in one setting (the evelator) extending it may not have been too wise of an idea. Do yourself a favour and don't read too many comments on the movie, especially ones that say they reveal content - trust me you don't want to have an inclination of what happens or 'who the devil is'.

I was hellbent on seeing this movie and I must say it did not disappoint. This reminded me of something a cross between a Hitchcock story and a lengthy Twilight Zone episode. M. Night Shyamalan has really outdone himself this time. He did a wonderful job of writing the script for this film. I think had he directed this production too, it might not have been a great success, since his last few brainchild's like "Lady In The Water" and the "Happening" were such major flops. The "Last Airbender" was certainly no better. His best works as we know are "The Six Sense", "Signs", and "The Village"... now those were good flicks. Perhaps at this time it would be best if he just stuck to writing and avoid directing altogether... who knows, this could be his new calling. As far as "Devil" goes, I thought it had a very intriguing story with an absorbing plot line. Even if it's a little far-fetched... so what, I still enjoyed it. The whole concept of the devil wreaking havoc on the lives of the five people trapped in the elevator was ingenious. There is just the right amount of horror and suspense in this flick with a healthy dose of comic relief as well. No gory scenes or nothing too extreme that no one can't stomach, and with minimal profanity. Indeed you will be on tenterhooks throughout the entire movie trying to guess what happens next. Also, the acting is pretty good and convincing. It might not be Oscar-worthy, but it is well cast. Sit tight for the twist at the end of the film, you will be undoubtedly shocked, leaving the theater and thinking about it long after the show's out. Overall," Devil" is a very smart, stylish picture. Don't miss it.

So this being my first review of any movie on this site, I'm doin so for one main reason... to state that M. Night Shyamalan shouldn't be written as a tax write off... well not yet atleast. True, he'd  written some stinkers earlier on... Lemme rephrase that, some massive stinkers, but, I think that this movie is gonna make everyone re-find that respect Shyamalan once commanded.  About this movie, it's a good watch and this comin from someone who couldn't sit to watch ' The last Airbender ' for more than half hour... You can believe. Go watch this flick, you'll come out pretty satisfied.

There are ideas called 'napkin ideas'. These ideas usually form when you're sitting at a coffee shop or a restaurant and doing nothing but enjoying the afternoon sun or people watching (for all you stalkers out there) All of sudden and for no apparent reason a great idea pops into your head. Instead of letting it fly off into Neverland ceasing to be heard of again, you grab a napkin, steal the waitress's pen and write madly. That random idea right there, soon turns into an amazing idea that will lead to people asking you "how the hell you ever thought of it". To which you reply - I dunno, guess I'm a friggin' genius. Then there are ideas you get in other places - like in the bathtub (Archimedes), in your car and maybe, just maybe... in a friggin' elevator. This is undoubtedly where M. Night Shyamalan got his 'brilliant' idea for Devil. I'm guessing he threw this idea together when he was 'going down' (laugh out loud if you must, those around you won't judge - I promise) I want to quote what is probably one of the funniest movies truths I've heard of recently. This statement comes from Quint over at Ain't It Cool News when describing the trailer for Devil: "The 'Shyamalan Groan' is well documented as the trailer for the first Night Chronicles flick, Devil, continues to screen. If you're not familiar with the term, it's when that trailer plays and Shyamalan's name comes up ("From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan") inducing groans and/or laughter from the audience." After such Shyamalan bombs as Lady in the Water (2006) and The Last Airbender (2010) it's no wonder why people think Devil is another one of M. Night Shyamalan's attempts to relive his glory days of The Sixth Sense (1999) - and don't get me wrong, it most definitely is. Now I understand this movie was not directed or fully penned out by Captain Twist, but from this point forward (and since it is M. Night's idea) I will be referring to it as a movie belonging to him. Mainly because Shyamalan should be the one to blame for this and probably (although hopefully not) the second and third installments of the upcoming Night Chronicles. Also, I just don't feel like I should blame director John Erick Dowdle, who also directed 2008's Quarantine (which I really liked); nor should it be the fault of the other writer, Brian Nelson, who wrote the awesomely dark Hard Candy (2005) My guess is that even if either of those two wanted to change anything about Shyamalan's 'idea', he probably would've stopped them. There's no reason those two couldn't have come up with something better put together than what they did. The only bad move Dowdle and Nelson really made with Devil was getting involved with The Night Chronicles to begin with. Devil begins one dark and stormy day when five strangers enter an elevator in a New York City high rise. Much to their chagrin, the elevator gets stuck and no matter what anybody does it seems to be good and jammed (I blame gremlins) Thankfully the building's security and eventually the police are informed, and the passengers are relived to hear they'll be out in no time. There's no real hurry, anyways, as the biggest threat seems to be the annoying mattress salesman's (Geoffrey Arend) badly timed humour. That is, there's no hurry until the lights go out and somebody dies... (dum, dum, DUM!!!) Bad murder mystery anyone? As expected, that's when everybody goes into panic mode including the security personnel and Detective Bowden (Chris Messina), who have been keeping a keen eye on the situation via a security camera that's wedged into the corner of the elevator car. As a rule of thumb (and common sense, really) I tend to dislike a movie more when it gets lazy and uses a character to tie up all the loose ends and/or explain the rules of the movie. In Devil that role is filled by the security guard Ramirez (Jacob Vargas), who is assigned to watch over the building's video surveillance. Turns out his religious grandma (or some other wise entity in his life) warned him about the Devil, and told him stories of how it would occasionally come to Earth in human form to torture the poor souls it was about to drag to Hell. Worse yet, when the Devil has it's fun - that's when everything around you starts going wrong. The security guard then (and I'm not kidding you here) drops his jam-draped toast onto the ground showing that it lands "jam side down". Goosebumps abound! Detective Bowden scoffs at security guard for mentioning this idea (even with such compelling proof) and continues on his merry little detective way - collecting crazy things like 'clues' and 'evidence'. It's only later on when things get really crazy that the detective (who has a dark, alcoholic past by the way (shocking, I know)) looks Ramirez in the eye and says "Alright, hypothetically speaking, lets say your right...". (the nerve of some people, hey? ) If that wasn't bad enough we have an unknown voice narrating Devil that makes what the security guard says a retread anyways (actually, maybe they're one and the same) Fail. As for the ending, well I won't 'spoil' it for you - but this is an M. Night vehicle so you know it's gonna be a twist. For the record, it's lamer than the end 0f The Village (2004) - I know, I didn't think it was possible, either. The other thing that drove me crazy in this movie was the score. Some horror movies get it right (Halloween (1978), The Exorcist (1973) and Jaws (1975) - just to name a few), but here what you get is like a bad version of the music from Inception (2010) It seems to come at the wrong times and far too often and overbearing and once again drives home the idea that the filmmakers were being lazy and hoping the music would make Devil scarier. That, or they simply didn't know any better - which is even worse. Same goes for M. Night's tired idea that not seeing your villain is much scarier than seeing it (like he had used with Signs (2002) and The Village) - hence half the action in this film being in the dark (and the irony is not lost on me that the same could be said for M. Night and his story-telling skills) I am giving Devil a closed door. It shouldn't be a surprise that I nor anybody with memories of the Final Destination or Saw series, would find this first installment of Shyamalan's 'Night Chronicles' a wholly unoriginal piece. You'll feel that comparison more if you see the film when Devil begins to reference its tag line - 'Bad things happen for a reason'. Even at 75 minutes it drags on long enough to make it hard to believe that by the end there's not a single character you care about. This may have made a better short film in the end - hell, we may find that to be true with the two remaining pictures. And I want to be clear here. I don't think this was that terrible an idea. I like horror movies and at some point we have to admit every movie has something they seemed to have ripped off from something else - but there's an original a refreshing way to go about it. As aforementioned, Devil felt like a lazy mess that in the end will be nothing more than a discount DVD, sitting in a bin at your local pharmacy with the likes of Marmaduke and Vampires Suck. Oh, M. Night, what happened to you? You used to be so cool... [...]

I went into this movie with very little expectations. Call it fear of the Shyamalan curse!! I came out pleasantly surprised. This is a good movie with a very good back story. I don't agree with the basic description "A group of people trapped in an elevator realize that the devil is among them." That's not accurate. But no need to correct it. The important thing is that the concept is good, the acting is consistent, and the writing and directing is actually pretty good too. There are no slow parts or drags in this movie, most probably due to it only being 80 minutes. But honestly, it did not need to be any longer. If you are going to see this movie, don't talk to anyone that has seen it or read any reviews that may reveal any spoilers. Just go and enjoy, and take it for what it is, a good trapped in an elevator moral tale! 7/10, worth seeing, especially if you like spooky back stories!

I didn't anticipate the "Ten Little Indians"-type of surprise twist near the end. However, I didn't understand why the Devil chose to punish bad people... if you believe in such things, wouldn't God punish evil people and Satan reward them for their criminal acts?

Personally I feel this movie could have been much better if it was left ambiguous. Take out all the *SPOOKY* hidden faces and the devil at the end and leave it up to the watcher to decide whether it was actually the devil, like the eccentric security guard states, or if it was something more logical (which I personally would have preferred) I think it is much more scary to think of what other humans might do to you in a situation like that rather than just blame the devil, “Something bad is happening so it must be Satan” is just taking the easy way out. I feel like the movie tries to make it out like the non religious characters are the dumb ones for not believing the ONE religious man’s reasoning for the devil being there… the falling peanut butter and jam toast. “This toast has a 50% chance to fall peanut butter side down, therefore, because it DID fall peanut butter side down… that means it Satan has come to kill some sinners”. I was very disappointed in this movie and did not find it scary, or even slightly thrilling. Many religious people might like this move, and even find it scary, because it shares in the same system of beliefs but anyone who thinks logically will probably not find this movie entertaining at all. If you want to see it I would say wait till it comes out in the cheap theatre and go on a Tuesday.

This movie was terrible. It was just an hour and a half long sermon. "If you are bad the devil is going to lock you in a room with a bunch of people and SCARE YOUUU". I found it really disappointing that the only character who knew what was really happening was just a superstitious moron who didn't say anything that made any sense... but, wow, turns out he was right! This movie was not scary and hardly interesting, I thought the concept was interesting but was pulled it off quite poorly.
