I couldn't watch the animation that accompanied the narration of the poem throughout the film. It was far from what I envision in my mind and not in a good way.

Excellent film about the beginning of an era of changing times and culture as well as the status quo of acceptability. Also great insight into the younger life of Ginsberg... Would have been a hands down 10, unfortunately there was some animation (I don't enjoy that in films)..

This multi-faceted presentation of the long poem , Howl and the fight against censorship provides James Franco with a showcase role as the agonized and suffering 50's figure, Allen Ginsberg. The film is loaded with recognizable character actors (Jeff Daniels, Treat Williams, Bob Balaban, Mary-Louise Parker.) John Hamm scores as a very clever defense attorney championing the publisher, Lawrence Ferlengetti's right to print Howl. The prosecuter is ably played by David Straitharn. The feverish animation sequences go a long way in explaining the hidden meanings within the poem's structure. I liked this movie a lot! It appears to be James Franco's year with his other great performance as the trapped canyoneer in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours a possible Oscar contender.
