Very disappointing. Pancino was just like a zombie. This movie had potential... but failed miserably even the story line was choppy.

Al Pacino was excellent in his portrayal with Insomnia which was also brilliantly visualised.

It explored the depth of human emotion in terms of guilt and raised questions of morality in terms of "does the end justify the means? "... gripping and thought provoking. Pacino was at his finest! Take a friend, worthy of coffee talk afterwards.

[...] It wasnt for action! It didnt say "this movie is going to be filled with blow-em-up kick in the ass action"! It was about the guilt, and as said in the name, his insomnia! I thought it was an excellent film.

I saw the movie at the Fox recently. It starts off with an interesting premise and location, then adds a twist that's throws ambiguity onto Pacino's motives. So far so good. Unfortunately there's Robin Williams as a fairly uninteresting antagonist who, despite being a novelist, is capable of performing feats normally reserved for a champion log roller. Pacino, at 60, can apparently swim fully clothed in freezing water for almost a minute without taking a breath and resurface without so much as a sneeze. He also can tell where Robin Williams' character lives in a State he's unfamiliar with by simply seeing the latter's photo on a book sleeve in front of a non-descript cabin in the woods. Amazing cop. Overall, not bad, but not the... sleeper... I was hoping for.

I was again impressed with Al Pachino's performance. He is perhaps the only actor I could want or imangin that could do that roll with will be a no dought best actor nomination, and what I've seen this year, he'll win. Bravo A+.

You have two of the most powerful character actors in Hollywood... you've got a comic genius and your stereotypical "gangsta"... and what do you get when you put them together in a psychological thriller? Nothing... *sigh* I have absolutely no idea why the writers did not expand with Finch... it was there... it was so there... and they didn't take it. The trailers for the film lead you to believe something that isn't there. The hype that this movie created in my mind from the trailers was not what it was. Sadly I'm disappointed. I agree with other reviewers... the Alaskan and Vancouver Island footage is breathtaking but not worth the admission price. Wouldn't have been as painful to drive the 10 hrs to the coast. The story was there, the plot was there, but the development of everything got missed.

This movie is simply cinematic eyecandy, and this finally is the only reason to go see this film. The sweeping shots of Alaskan mountains and the searing brightness of midnight are really the only story here. Al and Robin fumble their performances in that they seem to walk through this movie in a zombie like haze. Kudos to Robin who plays against character but doesn't really interest. And, well, Al, his performance was no, " You're out of order..." all in all an ok film but wait till it comes out on video... or see it as a matinee simply for the big screen explosion of colour, landscape, and stark lighting.

I found this movie interresting and unusual. I had seen the original 1997 version in a foreign language. I have to say the american one is much better.

I liked the movie, but the characters could have been developed a little more in depth. Robin Williams was convincing as a bad guy with a guy face; I almost felt sorry for him. Unfortunately he was not seen enough in the movie and his character was used too superficially.

I figured with Christopher Nolan directing, given that I loved Memento, and with Al Pacino starring, this had to be a winner. I am disappointed. Pacino, as usual, was a consummate professional, the rest of the cast good, but the movie was slow, the plot insipid and weak. This seemed like a movie that was made solely to draw an audience with star power. Well it worked, it drew me and I regret it.

If you like movies with deep meenings, go see Insomnia. I liked it very much. It was very smart, very logical and well made. Al Pacino is magnificent (he is magnificent in all the roles) Robin Williams plays professionally too. Christopher Nolan (director) is an ingenious man. I would rather call Insomnia a work of art. Well constructed, good dialogs and a good distribution of roles. Great movie!

The scenery was wonderful, and made a nice contrast with the sordidness of the human motives being uncovered. The scene where Pacino was caught beneath the logs kind of summed this up -- nature defiled and turned into a murderous maze. However, you do NOT find this kind of scenery north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska, though you do in Norway, where the original story was set. I was puzzled by the scene where Pacino talks with the hotel keeper just before the final scene. The conversation gets started, then all of a sudden she's asleep on his bed and he's still awake. What are we supposed to assume here?

Insomnia is a an extremely interesting movie, with great story line, heart pounding suspense and beautiful camera work. I found the movie rather slow in the first 30 minutes and from then till the end it was simply great. This movie is filled with surprises and shows all the signs of an intelligently made thriller.

This is a refreshing movie that challenges the intelligent viewer to question intentionality and the distinction between 'right' and 'wrong'. Unlike many movies that coerce the audience to side with the "good guy" or with the misunderstood but well-intentioned "bad guy", this movie presents two flawed human beings who are on opposites sides of the legal system but on the same side of morality. There are no simple stereotypes to help pigeon-hole the characters. Instead, enjoyment of this movie requires the ability to stand outside of the plot to understand the very clever intellectual twist that is fundamental to the success of this movie. It may have lacked the "hit you over the head" plot twist of Momento, but was equally well-crafted.

Hasn't Al Pacino played this role before? And why do I get the feeling Hilary Swank was as star struck by meeting him in real life as she was in the movie? Not good, and Robin Williams is not believable in his role either. If this gets nominated for awards, I will truely think the art of film is in a sorry state. It's like Pacino and Williams has a movie quota to fill up, so they put in the minimal amount of acting possible. Bleck.

After seeing Memento, I agree that I expected a bit more from this film. Notheless, Pacino gave an awesome performance, and Robin Williams did play an ok bad guy. The idea of the movie is good and overall it was very entertaining. Maybe not Oscar winning, but pretty good.

Awesome movie! The acting was excellent and the story was original. It's great to see Robin W. Act in a totally different role than his normal. Pacino's acting kicked ass as usual. A must see for people with intellect, if you want brainless action go see Star Wars or Spider man.

Although this movie had some big names in it, it was a let down. The most interesting thing about this movie was watching Robin Williams stretch into a "bad guy", unfortunately I don't think he was able to convince anyone. I know I still see him as Mrs. Doubtfire. As for Al Pacino, his character was the exact opposite, identical to almost all others he's played before. Hilary Swank delivered the best performance in this movie, all twelve lines. So if you are looking for something new, you may want to skip this one.

An enjoyable and inventive twist on the usual "catch-the-killer" genre. Williams and Swank deliver solid performances, while Pacino does a good job at the character he does best. Beautiful landscapes and odd camera tricks make this well worth the price of admission. A 7.9 in my books.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I'm usually not a big fan of remakes. Remakes, be they updated of old (usually better) films or American versions foreign language films, tend to suffer from the same problems when it comes time to go in front of the cameras: the attempt to make the film appeal to a larger audience almost always results in an inferior product. Recent films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brotherhood of the Wolf have proven that audiences will go see a subtitled film if it looks like it will appeal to them. Given this, I tend to roll my eyes every time I see a notice in Variety or Hollywood Reporter that some director or studio has decided to "adapt" a foreign film whose only sin was that it wasn't shot in English. Nine times out of ten, it's just plain unnecessary. Fortunately, this is not the case with Insomnia, the remake of the 1997 Norwegian film that was popular on the Art House circuit in the U. S. This may be due in part to the fact that screenwriter Hillary Seitz has stuck very close to the original screenplay while making the changes needed to make the story play to an American audience. The plot is a good twist on the traditional manhunt premise. Two L. A. cops, Will Donner (Al Pacino) and Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan) travel to Alaska to help investigate the murder of a teenaged girl. With their entire department under investigation by Internal Affairs, Donner have no doubt that they have been sent out of L. A. more to stay away from investigators than to render assistance to a small town police department. When Eckhart informs Donner that he's about to make a deal to stay out of jail, the relationship between the partners becomes strained but the two set to work on the case. Assisting the big city detectives is local detective Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank) A fan of Donner's work, Burr can't wait to study from the master. It doesn't take long before Donner has some leads in the case and an opportunity to capture the suspected killer. But a fatal mistake in the fog-covered Alaskan woods spins Donner's life into an entirely unexpected direction. The only witness to this event is the killer, who uses this connection to Donner to try and cover up all evidence that would lead to him. The film has some really good moments and some great character work. Robin Williams manages to turn in a very understated performance as mystery writer and murder suspect Walter Finch. The guy comes off as creepy without falling too far into stereotype. Maura Tierney (ER, NewsRadio) has nice turn as Rachel, the woman who runs the lodge Donner stays in and who becomes his confidant. With the little screen time she gets here, Tierney almost makes up for the fact she has spent the past few seasons playing a terrible character on ER. Almost. The film is far from perfect. Like many mystery / thrillers, there are some plot gaps and minor inconsistencies but nothing so severe that it drags the whole film down. It manages to stay away from most cliches used in this kind of film and does a good job of putting a spin on a few, unlike the Sandra Bullock disaster Murder by Numbers. The film's major flaw is the last act, where it does start to fall into formula just a bit. Even so, this is good entertainment if you happen to be someone looking for a film that doesn't have its heroes wearing spandex or wielding lightsabers. :)
