Man, I could write a book-long review of this movie, but I won't. I will just say that it is NOT for the majority of the movie-going audience; they will find it confusing and offensive. But if you are into dark, brooding and thought-provoking movies that cross some boundaries, then definitely see it. I am still thinking about it 2 months after seeing it.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I was really shocked when watching "Antichrist" today, especially with a close shot of a [...] being sliced off with scissors and other extreme violence plus explicit sex. The story is so stupid that it leads to confusion most of the time...

This movie has a lot more depth than most people give it credit for. I didn't feel the violence was just there for shock value. Full of symbolism and cultural references/ references to other artists.

Anyone who knows film and a specific genre of it will appreciate this highly engrossing and experimental film. While very disturbing, the art direction in this movie and cinematography is an art form unto itself. Don't pay any attention to the low ratings you see here. I would go so far to say they those giving this film a 1 and a 2 are of that level of art appreciation and intellectual caliber.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] This is the sort of movie that can be viewed through two seperate lenses. The first lens would be that of a normal movie-goer, he or she will see shocking and disturbing imagery that may or may not be part of a grander metaphor for a battle of the sexes, original sin, traditional parent roles, etc. These supposed metaphors are so loose and poorly constructed that the film basically gives up on them at the halfway mark and then relies heavily on just making crude attempts to shock the audience to maintain its high-brow film credibility. Viewed through this lens, the film fails horribly. I put myself into this first category, and give the move 2/10 (that extra point comes from my soft spot for talking animals) The second lens would be that of someone who wants to see Willem Dafoe's balls, and if that is your goal... you don't have to wait long, they're there in the first five minutes (yes, they're "stunt balls" but still).. if you're one of those people... this movie gets a 10/10.

There are many reviews calling this movie "art". They are lying. This movie desperately wants you to believe it is artistic, but it is in reality more like teenage poetry. Dark, brooding, pathetic and disturbed. Just because a film uses black and white, slow-motion, and graphic sex does not make it excellent. In fact, the film is wildly self-indulgent, tries to hide vulgarity behind the premise of expression, and useless. The only way I can understand someone recommending this film is as a long, punishing twist on the Rick-roll même (Haha, you got Antichrist'd) Avoid this film at all costs.

So what exactly does this movie have to do with the Christian faith since the Anti-Christ is a central figure in end times Christian prophesy? I guess the makers of this film coming from secular northern European countires have decided to give us their own take on Christianity's chief foe. Because this movie's title is so deceiving I suspect that it will draw a large number of people to it who will be expecting something entirely different. This is why when you want to deal with a faith based subject, you best be serious about examining or exploring that faith or else leave it alone including its name and all elements related to it. This movie like the Anti-Christ is both deceptive and bad!

Beautifully shot - and so important to endorse films like this when we are soon to be served up yet another slice of 'Twilight' cheese.

I notice that there really isn't an inbetween with this movie. You either literally love it or literally thought it was a waste. I guess we can conclude that this movie appeals to an audience of particular taste; art. Personally, if I sat down to watch it with intentions of watching a movie of artistic beauty, then I'd rate it significantly higher. However, it is classified and described as as a horror flick even in its trailer showings. I saw no horror in there whatsoever thus I gave it a low rating.

Definitely a must see. Antichrist is an art work, engaging, disturbing and sometimes even crude but it has a strong psychological power rarely seen in current movies.

This movie is very disturbing on many different levels. Very graphic. Warning - Potential Spoiler: As usual (meaning nothing new to the genre here) one person is totally clueless that they're married to a complete whacko. I suppose if you are into this kind of disturbing depiction of "man" you would enjoy this kind of movie, but for me I thought the story and the characters could have been flushed out a lot better. The movie did not move me at all. Very forgetable as soon as I left the theatre.

This film is important for a number of reasons. 1 – It displays the selfishness of parents who choose to use their energy sabotaging a situation they don’t like being in, rather than overcoming the Platonic patriarchal system that requires them to do good by submitting their wills to others in order to certify their happiness. Von Trier asks us not to punish those around us and blame it on ‘evil’. He asks us through this film to use all our rage to do something constructive – not necessarily good, but clearly to resist the false trappings of an ego driven to excuse itself from contemplation and acting. By that I mean action as opposed to working or labouring. Most importantly the film displays how by going the other direction, we can convince ourselves that it is anything but ourselves that need changing. 2 – It displays how people want to fix each other and fix situations on the outside of themselves, all the while the real problem festers within them. The more the fixing the more mutated the external world becomes… the more we try to form a pattern to convince ourselves that the other needs fixing… vicious circle. 3 – It displays how women and men can buy into traditional unhealthy models of what women are and how they are connected to nature, because their education and formation has lacked self-actualization and investigation of WHO women are. 4 – It uses biblical terminology as a challenge to most people on this Earth who are still relying on morality training wheels (ie. Religious tradition) Getting lost in trying to attach typical symbolism to his own allegory is just von Trier’s way of leading us into a fog and getting us out into nature – to see the difference between facing nature and facing shame, self-love, and selfish passion. 5 – By using the remote natural setting, it really removes distraction and let’s the story get down to the nuts and bolts of relationship and disconnection. 6 - Homage paid to Nietzsche, who over 120 years ago made similar and parallel requests of humanity. 7 – It displays that the immediate pleasure of intercourse is not only avoidance of crucial discourse, it is a means to forge contempt in one’s partner, self loathing and false dependency. Important note for in-depth discourse: the a-typical diagnosis. Caution: If one does not have either major fortitude, relate to the above concepts or have some articulate people to break it down with after, one will likely be poisoned by this film and feel sick. See it with others who will discuss it after without wise-acring. Do not expect to be entertained.

Antichrist is a film that abounds in rich, dark imagery. This is a film suffused in poetic symbolism. The ghosts of Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Poe are clinging gleefully from the shadows of the Three Beggars (grief, pain and despair) It is as if Lars Von Trier, the films director, was reading to us Baudelaire's introduction to Flowers of Evil in a surreal language of consonants and vowels hammered on to an upside down alphabet. Who has not been moved in their own lives by the illusion of duality and the separation caused by ego to all things? If Christ is the embodiment of compassion and the wisdom that springs forth from the heart then the AntiChrist is the fear that extinguishes all hope and rules the mind like a tyrant. This movie is not for children or those sensitive, impressionistic, fragile minds. Both actors in the film give honest, believable performances. The cinematography, sound, and art direction are superb as they paint a canvas that Hieronymous Bosch would be proud of. For those who are not familiar with Baudelaire's "To The Reader" in his introduction to Flower's of Evil it reads as follows: To the Reader Folly and error, avarice and vice, Employ our souls and waste our bodies' force. As mangey beggars incubate their lice, We nourish our innocuous remorse. Our sins are stubborn, craven our repentance. For our weak vows we ask excessive prices. Trusting our tears will wash away the sentence, We sneak off where the muddy road entices. Cradled in evil, that Thrice-Great Magician, The Devil, rocks our souls, that can't resist; And the rich metal of our own volition Is vaporised by that sage alchemist. The Devil pulls the strings by which we're worked: By all revolting objects lured, we slink Hellwards; each day down one more step we're jerked Feeling no horror, through the shades that stink. Just as a lustful pauper bites and kisses The scarred and shrivelled breast of an old whore, We steal, along the roadside, furtive blisses, Squeezing them, like stale oranges, for more. Packed tight, like hives of maggots, thickly seething Within our brains a host of demons surges. Deep down into our lungs at every breathing, Death flows, an unseen river, moaning dirges. If rape or arson, poison, or the knife Has wove no pleasing patterns in the stuff Of this drab canvas we accept as life — It is because we are not bold enough! Amongst the jackals, leopards, mongrels, apes, Snakes, scorpions, vultures, that with hellish din, Squeal, roar, writhe, gambol, crawl, with monstrous shapes, In each man's foul menagerie of sin — There's one more damned than all. He never gambols, Nor crawls, nor roars, but, from the rest withdrawn, Gladly of this whole earth would make a shambles And swallow up existence with a yawn... Ennui! He smokes his hookah, while he dreams Of gibbets, weeping tears he cannot smother. You know this dainty monster, too, it seems — Hypocrite reader! — You! — My twin! — My brother!

Contrary to the film review in "The Hour", Antichrist is not a film about "a couple whose mutual sexual involvement causes the death of their child". It is a deeply moving film that visualizes the pain and suffering that a couple feels when they lose a child. It is a story told in metaphor. They do not cause the death of their child- it just happens. Many have described the first five minutes of Antichrist as arguably the best opening to a movie. It is a psychological film that dwells into the very dark places of human beings and humanity. Some describe it as a horror film but I would disagree because a horror film has too much cheesy role play that Antichrist completely avoids. Antichrist is arguably Von Trier's best work so far. It is an intensely disturbing and moving film about the madness that human beings can be driven to. The loss of a child is unbearable for a parent. Most relationships break up after such an incident. One of the first things to go is sexual interest and a sort of castration often takes places whereby couples lose desire for each other. The steps of grieving are well laid out in the film and very well demarcated. The intense visual play speaks volumes and the cinematographic beauty of the film is overwhelming. The music is also haunting and very introspective of the interiority of the characters. Charlotte Gainsbourg is remarkable and very deservedly won the top actor prize at Cannes. It is tragic that people are unable to get over the literal representations in the film. This film should be appreciated for its intense beauty and metaphorical storyline and the subtext that underlies all the visual representations of pain and suffering. It is a classic that perhaps most people are just not ready for yet.

This film was amazing, disturbing, beautiful, bizarre and poetic all at once. If lars wants to claim his genius, I am backing him all the way. I watched it twice and with the understanding that he wrote the script while suffering from a debilitating depression. I venture to interpret this film as his own metaphoric journey. The characters represent the differents aspects of his psyche. HE is the rational, SHE is the irrational, the forest and nature itself alligned with the feminine psyche and so on. Like a dream there is a trove of symbolism to be found. Rich stuff here with so much to explore but NOT for the faint of heart.

Wow!. I am not sure here, but this movie is quite shocking and features great performances by two great actors (and just about nobody else) The story moves along a little slow at times but it definitely picks up momentum later on, and maybe goes a little too far. I would recommend it, with caution, you must like this genre and not be easily bothered by gruesome and explicit content.
