An interesting yet twisted show, it reminded me something like Alice in Wonderland but a very darker version of it.

I really wanted to like this movie from the previews. I like Ledger and Depp as actors. I also like weird movies and this one conjured images of Brazil, then I realized it was the same director (Terry Gilliam) 26 years apart. Maybe I should look into his other work? You have to give the movie credit, it is quite original. Acting was great by Christopher Plummer and Heath Ledger, even Andrew Garfield! Any movie with Tom Waits in it has got to be cool... well, maybe not. It was just a classic "devil's making deals for peoples' souls" with add-ons, and barring the excellent imagery, it was kind of boring. Serious film buffs will probably appreciate it for years to come. There is some interesting social commentary, but no morals to be found. Overall a fun romp, but certainly not everyone will enjoy it!

Lots of good messages, good acting, imagination, amazing surreal landscapes, humor and magic. It also has a good script and good acting. I like the characters. A very unusual & interesting movie. It is fascinating! I've seen it a few times and each time I get more from it.

Very imaginative and fun. There may have been not enough time shown in the actual "imaginarium", because the scenes that were shown were very interesting.

We thought it would be interesting, but the interesting parts only lasted a couple minutes. The movie stalled way too many times with pointless, meaningless dialogue that really didn't further the plot. I didn't think this movie would keep me looking at my watch... but it did.

Meh... just not a fan of Terry Gilliam's craziness. It's special. But like when you say that about food, you're not really enjoying it that much. While I understand fanatics of dreams and unexplained metaphores will love it quite much, to me it's interesting at best. I'd rather watch Charlie and the Chocolate factory again.

Oh thank you to all that heard my prayers! A real movie has been made in this decade! Forget who plays who. Forget the world outside is so real. Forget everything you watched in the last 10 years and finally enjoy a movie made for what they are meant to. To entertain and to be fill with wonder. Thank you Terry Gilliam. Thank you.

Beautiful movie. Very dark, very enjoyable. And I think the performances from all of the actors/actresses were phenomenal.

I generally never give a movie a 10 but in this case, I feel I have to if only to offset the anine reviews giving it a 1. This is a very interesting movie, well-acted and beautifully presented. Johnny Depp is nothing short of brilliant. Depp is able to play Heath Ledger playing a character. Stunning! On the other hand, Judd Law is mediocre. Highly recommended to anyone tired of the standard hollywood fare.

The Imaginsrium of Doctor Parnassus is not your regular everyday movie. It is a movie filled with serlalisum, excitment and intergie. While the plot sometimes wondered, the overall theme of the movie was different and definitly worth seeing. Jonney Dept was faberlus as one of the many faces of a mystierous creater. This moive brings a new meaning to the other side of the looking glass.

This extraordinary movie full of colour and magic made me think about how people in society gamble with the lives of others to have it their way, for control, power and gain. Unnecessary evil is a choice and a collaborative work. Heath, Johnny, Jude, Colin and the rest of the cast were amazing, it was like watching theater for intellectuals.

At 10:30 this morning, at the Rainbow, G and I saw Terry Gilliam's The Imagination of Doctor Parnassus. We have liked his stuff from Monty Python on and wanted to catch this one in a theatre before it left town; but it'll likely be back in Ottawa to the Byetown at least. The plot is the Faustian story. To our delight, Christopher Plummer played his Lear character (Stratford and Broadway), and we are familiar with Chris' Lear. And there is a straight-speaking midget fool character, as in Lear, a young beautiful and darling daughter Cordelia character, whom he has jeopardized with his scheming and gambling, and two cleaver male suitors and rivals. They are all together in a travelling magic stage show, which includes a mirror, the other side of which one finds the fantasy world of his own imagination and the movie enters this animated fantasy from time to time, but spends most of the time with the stage reality of the impeding delivery of the darling daughter to the devious devil, played wonderfully by Tom Watts. All the actors give accomplished performances and there's some solid Python passages. Now I know you shy away from fantasy, and likely rightly so is most cases. But this isn't fantasy like that. It's in the Shakespearian/Elizabethan tradition.

In what wants to seem an effort at edgy metacritique, the producers/director capitalize off "Academy-award-winner Heath Ledger" in this perverted tale. The depressed and resentful Heath in the scene where Artemis steals his flute is awful to see. Johnny Depp was good in his part, but his performance does not redeem the experience.

I loved it, the scenes were so beautiful sometimes made of trash - it was artistry. There were a few nods to Alice I enjoyed. Tom Waits is always a joy to watch.

The preveiws made it look so much better than it actually was. To be honest it was kind of a let down, it was original though.

Very creative imagery, befuddled by a poor script and lack-luster storytelling. The actors do well with what they've been given, particularly a delightful performance by Tom Waits. However, the plot of this movie is muddy and slow, and there are events that occur that seem to be thrown in because the director thought they would "look good", rather than to push the plot forward. Nice too look at, harder to sit through.

It won't fit everyone's taste but for me it was done exceptionally well and the sets were beautifully done. An artists' dream and Heath Ledger's unfortunate death did not feel like it hindered the movie because of his friends' contribution.

I find it strange that people either hate this movie or call it far-out brilliant. It is not bad: Tom Waits, Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp save this movie. It is definitely not a complex, mind-bending experience. You get your hopes up, but nothing really impresses. People must be used to really boring stuff. Disappointing because it had such incredible potential, but sadly it is just ok.

Terry Gilliam outdid himself in imagination and creativity. It's not your typical Hollywood movie, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. Excellent special effects, casting, costumes and scenery.

You either love or hate this movie, mostly because it requires some thought. This is not a simple visual and sound experience like most movies. This movie is very Monty Pythonesque with Gilliam at the controls but it is also an insight into peoples inner drives and dreams, wishes and choices. Lots of symbolism, and deeper meaning, something the majority of people aren't used to. The plot is actually pretty simple: devil makes a bargain with a man and man tries to fix the consequence with another bargain. Whats so confusing about that. Visually stunning and interesting. A real ride.

The acting was incredible, then ending was perfect, and the visuals were a rare treat. Great writing, great performances all around... and I mean all around! Every actor played well. Definitely a movie to see with another movie lover (or two) Go for the love of a story - which makes the universe tick... (hint...)

I do not normally rate films 10/10 but I feel I should, if only to make up for all of the anine 1s, 2s and 3s people have been giving it. It is a great movie. Visually stunning and wonderous to watch. All of the main characters are superbe including Jonny Depp would does a brilliant job playing Heath Ledger playing a character. This is a film you can get your teeth into, unlike so much of the pablum audiences seem to love.

I wanted to like this movie more than I did but honestly it felt a little flat; had its moments but lacked a punch. We finally get to see Heath laid to rest. This movie felt closest to Baron Munchhauzen, and that being said, I think it was the CGI that took away from some of the experience from the movie. The CGI allowed for more fantastical worlds but the real sets from BM worked better. Being real they felt more real, in IoDP I just couldn’t get into the film like I wanted too, many of the scenes were quickly forgotten. Perhaps with Heath’s death too much had to be sacrificed in the editing room for this film to be truly great.

Wow!!! A great movie, but unfortunately very complex to a lot of people, that will judge the movie as a "stupid one". But, for those who are used to Terry Gillian style, go, enjoy and have fun! Heath Ledger is great! And for sure his absence at the end of the movie was felt. But, on the other hand, all the alter egos, Jude Law, Colin Farrel and the brilliant John Deep were great! The movie lets us thinking about what is really true and what comes to our really "imaginarium". The scenario is also great. Christopher Plummer is a very good one also. Once again, all my best to Terry Gillian. Good Job! I will use what someone has written in this website: MMS = Movie Must See!

A Gilliam trademark movie, with a strong acting ensemble. The storyline was very inventive- a nice surprise from standard Hollywood fare. It was easy enough to follow along. I recommend it, especially if you enjoy Tim Burton movies crossed with a Monty Python vision. Step into another world. Enjoy the ride. PS_Look for Vancouver sight lines... it was partially shot in our fine city.

VERY DIFFERENT. Don't go in expecting a movie that makes a lot of sense BUT... watch carefully and enjoy the ride. Younger people I would think would tend to be bored. It does take some serious thought but in the end it's worth it.

And now for something completely different indeed. The story WAS a little confused and confusing but our own imagination is often like that isn't it? I'd give it a 10 for being artistically perfect but I left the movie theater feeling like the movie was not complete for some reason. The movie evolves slowly but the end comes to rapidly as if Gilliam had wanted to end the whole thing at one point. Perhaps the death of Heath Ledger had something to do with it. Although Depp was his equal and maybe even better, Farrell and Law were not. Nevertheless I enjoyed the movie a lot. I respect those who didn't like it but boring... come on!

Incredible! Terry Gilliam's imagination explodes! Some times it sort of derails, so to speak, but Heath Leadger and Johnny Depp are fantastic! I felt as if every scene had a message. Notable, the fact that you can never stop people from expressing themselves! I almost cried when Heath left!
