The story of a young soldier who goes through hell after being captured in Afghanistan and then has trouble coping with life back home. Tobey Maguire returns from war unable to cope with the horror's he went through and no longer trusts his brother or wife. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the screw up brother who always lets down the family. The cast is incredible and the story is quite sad at points, one of the years better films.

War is bad and messes you up. Ok, we get it. Now what? Well, some more suffering (mental and otherwise) scenes. Maybe it's just my cup of tea.

Such an emotional, touching, deep movie. It really shows the effects on families due to the un-need war. I think there's a few people who need to see this, and maybe it will open their eyes about what's really happening.

I thought that I knew everything about the plot just by watching the trailer but I was surprised to see that there were a lot of imortant things that were not shown in the trailer. I'm not sure how to rate the movie because the acting is great, the plot is very good but there's still something that bothered me. I felt like the most interesting part of the movie is when Tobey Macguire's character comes back home (I'M not spoiling anything since that was is the trailer), but that only happens after an hour! That was disappointind because you know he's going to come back... so there's no surprise there and that's the most interesting part of the movie... that should have been at least the last half of the movie... still worth renting, the story is great.

Just watched this on DVD. What an awesome show. Should have been nominated for some Oscars. Excellent acting by everybody and especially Toby Mcguire. Now he will not just be "Spidey to me anymore. Excellent all around movie.

I am so upset!!! I can't believe the academy snubbed this movie... Tobey should have gotten a nod. The movie as well in the 10 nominated. The elder daughter did a phenomenal job too. Really good movie. I still super mad at the academy... but i'll get over myself...

I'd be very surprised if Tobey McGuire doesn't win an oscar, so heart-wrenching. This is truly realistic to what a soldier who has seen or been thru too much in a war acts. FANTASTIC ACTING!! Better than that movie Precious!!

Tobey Maguire did a really awesome job. He played his character very well and I definitely did not expect the way he acted in the end of the film. The movie is thrilling, exciting and adventures. It will make you laugh, cry and thing about the current war going on. It is inspiring and really shows how strong a brothers love can be! I would definitely recomend it to everyone I know!!

This movie blew me away. Tobys acting was absolutely AMAZING. Such a stray from spiderman but in a good way. The story line was incredible and the dramatic scenes were done perfectly. It was a fantastic movie and I recommend it to everyone.

Good movie but not always easy to watch. If you’re like me and you’re tired of hearing/seeing war images and violence, then there are some scenes that aren’t too pleasant to watch. The family scenes were lovely though. Nathalie Portman is a wonderful actress. I truly enjoyed watching her on screen. I must say, I expected more passion after seeing the trailer. I was surprised to see that there is very little of it in the movie. Nonetheless, it’s still a good drama.

Graphic parts of the movie were disturbing and I was not expecting it to be so tragic. I think the story was realistic but I didn't leave the theatre happy that I had seen this movie. Some things you just don't want to think about.

This movie was too focused on the American perspective (bravery, serving your country etc.) When will we see a movie about the terrible suffering of the Afghanistani's. The only thing I would hope people take home from this movie is how useless this war is.

If you saw the preview as presented online or in theatres, you felt the tension driving the story-line. This simply was not the case as the movie unfolded. At best it was okay, at worst it should have followed the genius of its edited preview.

Very moving movie. Pulls on the heartstrings with some amazing dialogue and acting all around. The little girls were the best child actors I have seen in a while. The film manages to condense so many issues into a tight well produced package. Toby’s character reminded me a lot of the Hurt Locker but while that film focused more on the effects of war on the soldier, Brothers takes a broader scope and looks at the effect of war on the soldier and his love ones. Brothers though, allows you to feel far more empathetic for the characters and while not an action movie, it keeps you on the edge your seat by creating great tension through its well conceived script.

I loved this movie. I went in thinking it would be just like pearl harbour but it was hardly that. The movie plays on every emotion and can be disturbing in parts. It's a great depiction of post traumatic stress disorder and its effect on family. The actors are amazing... and Jake is sexy as always hhaha.

Storyline is so overdone: Legends of the Fall, Pearl Harbour etc. etc except in those movies you get a sense of a timeline. This movie, I take it, is over a period of months. Nathalie Portman is miscast as a mother/bride. Do not get a sense of chemistry with her and Tobey. She doesn't collapse when she is informed about Tobey nor does she jump in hysterics when reunited. The only real good acting in this movie comes from the little girl who plays their eldest. So glad I didn't pay to see this. Save your money and if you want to watch a film about war's effects on people, watch Jacob's Ladder or Platoon. If you want to see a Real love triangle (as this one does not have one) then watch Pearl Harbour. LOL.

Comparing Natalie Portman's lifeless performance in Star Wars and Toby McGuire emotionless acting in Spiderman, these actors have gone far from where they have been and improved so much in this movie. All the of the rage and emotions thrown around was spectacular and so convincing. The reality of the war and what it can do to a person was well portrayed. The only flaw in the movie storyline is that ONE thing either Natalie and Jake Gyllenhal could have said, the truth, that would have prevented all the outrage and madness. To me, that was unrealistic.

Superb acting by all the cast members! And what I also liked is the important issues that were discussed in the movie such as the effects of war on soldiers and their families, as well as sibling rivalry and how some parents prefer one of their kids over another. I would defenitively recommend this movie.

Nice to see that americans are able to capture raw emotions just as well as our dutch-euro counterparts (of which this is a remake of) This is an important film that marks Tobey's arrival for more adult roles. Jake's role is limited as it was in Brokeback. Fantastic supporting acting by the elder father. My only qualm is that the cinematography could have been more... developped. It would have made this movie epic.

Amazing film, with a subtle, beautiful soundtrack theme-music. All the character 'motivations' are well-played out and the little girls are fantastic. The mom is the only-throw part but she's does not have a lot of screen-time anyway so whatevers. A very satisfying film that pulls you in with facial expressions, things left unsaid, details, etc. etc... GO SEE IT!

The plot develops too fast; without having read a synopsis, as above, I would not have been faimiliar with all that was going on. Otherwise, a very touching, emotional movie. I think the synopsis above is incorrect with the names of the brothers. It is Sam who goes overseas & Tommy who is the brother-in-law!!!

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
War is never a good thing. Sometimes it is a necessary thing, though everyone will always ask questions on what is really necessary. In this movie the Toby McGuire character is sent to Afghanistan in the American war there and is forced to kill a fellow marine by the Taliban. His wife, played by Natalie Portman, thinks he is dead and finds comfort in McGuire's brother - they have an affair - the brother played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Toby McGuire comes back traumatized and finds out about the affair and goes beserk: almost killing his brother, trashing his kitchen, then almost killing himself. The Toby McGuire characater and Natalie Portman manage to reconcile at the end. This movie did me some good as it humanized the serious situation of War and how the War always comes home even if it is on the other side of the world. I wonder what war is really good for - Obama says that the Americans must fight evil - and the Taliban are evil - so how can we live through this trauma and still retain our human dignity. I think this movie struggles with some of these themes, quite intelligently and even delicately, I think.
